Hockey Round Up: Week 3
Week 3 is in the books, the round up is back. Get your popcorn ready.
1) Really wanted to have another podcast episode for this week’s round up, but we couldn’t make it work. That’s my fault.
2)Let’s get after it. Starting with a goal Jordie blogged, but it deserves more of the spotlight. HS kid in Canada with a pass to himself. Don’t even know what to call this. Its not a saucer, not really an alley-oop. It’s definitely a must-watch.
3) And now….the Chicago Blackhawks. Oh boo hoo, the Salary Cap stole half of our team. We can’t win with stupid Russians and now Duncan Keith is out. We stink. WRONG. The Hawks got off to a bit of a sluggish start this year, but now they have back to back shut out wins vs the team they murdered in the Western Conference Final and Stanley Cup Final. Both game winners…The. Captain.
I think it’s safe to say that Toews is the best 3 on 3 player of all time. The Hawks have their D on lock down and are looking like they’ll be just fine this year. According to Elias, the Blackhawks are the first team ever to record back to back regular season overtime shutouts.
4)I LOVE 3 on 3. I want to see Olympic Hockey have 3 on 3 as its own event. Maybe use NHL players for real hockey and have the 3 on 3 tournament be U-23 or U-20.
5) The only guy who doesn’t like 3 on 3 is our favorite bully, Dustin Byfuglien
“It’s terrible. It’s a terrible part of hockey. It’s not hockey,” Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien said this morning after his team lost 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Lightning here Friday night.
“It ain’t hockey. It’s ‘Just let the kids play.’ It’s stupid.
“Just keep it four-on-four, five-on-five. Let’s just play hockey.”
A lot of open ice, he’s fat. That’s the joke. Buff is getting close to crossing that line between being a bully/hard guy to play against and a dirty player.
5) Aside from 3 on 3, the World Cup, and expansion, the biggest offseason discussion was about ads on jerseys. I’m a capitalist pig so I think having a few tasteful ads on the jerseys would be fine, but now I’m against it. It’s a slippery slope. First you’re just putting a small golden arches sticker on the helmet, and before you know it refs have prostate ads on their ass
6) The Anaheim Ducks stink right now. The Ducks had a ton of shots last night vs the Hawks, but only two really stood out in regulation as premium scoring chances.
–The Ducks have been shut out in 5 of their 8 games. They’ve only scored more than one goal once(their only win of the year).
–Freddie Andersen has a .940 sv% and a 1.71 GAA this year…he has zero wins. That’s absurd.
–There are 7 players in the league that have as many or goals than the Ducks entire team, including Jaromir Jagr who is 43 years old and has 6 goals so far this year.
–The Ducks lead the NHL in the fuck boys. Perry, Kesler, Bieksa, Hagelin, Tim Jackman, Chris Stewart, Clayton Stoner, Freddie Andersen, and I don’t love Shawn Horcoff either. That’s too many assholes on one team. You can’t win that way. Especially when Boudreau is your coach. He’s probably getting fired soon.
7) Back to the highlights. Giroux giving Hank and everyone motion sickness. Viva La Shootout
I don’t really know what to make of the Flyers. In my head they stink, but then every time I turn them on they look pretty good. Their defense is awful on paper, but they look solid on the ice. Who knows, maybe they battle for that last wild card spot.
8) Philly won’t be catching Washington no matter what. Not with Kuznetsov making plays like this
9) A ton of great saves this week.
Quick with a game saver against McDavid that was probably actually a goal
Freddie Andersen with an insane paddle save that obviously led to another loss
But the number one came from Cawlidge Hawkey. Ryan Ruck with a glove save with his blocker, if that makes sense
